2022 Women’s History Month Begins; WR Immigration Launches “Continue the Learning” Program

Staying informed and cultivating knowledge is critical to our job as immigration professionals.  At WR Immigration, this pursuit is foundational to who we are as a firm and is a quality we prize in every employee.  We strive to be the leading voice on immigration-related topics by reporting on best practices and regulatory changes across a variety of platforms, including our WRapid™ knowledge base, conferences, blog, social media, and more.

Given this aspect of our culture, we have launched a “Continue the Learning” program sponsored by our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Accessibility (DEIA) committee to promote educational opportunities in other areas equally important to our mission as an immigration law firm.  The “Continue the Learning” program cultivates a culture of respect, inclusion, and diversity in the workplace by fostering firm-wide learning experiences on topics relevant to DEIA. 

Last month, we shared an educational quiz to test and grow the knowledge of our staff, colleagues, friends, and clients on the topic of Black History.  The quiz was widely praised for being a fun and interactive learning experience! (Don’t worry – if you have taken it yet, there’s still time! Go ahead and click here to test your Black History knowledge!)  We also published a series of short biographies on Black influencers in the fields of law and entertainment, including Charlotte E. Ray, Sidney Poitier, and Thurgood Marshall

This month is Women’s History Month, and we are continuing the learning with another quiz (coming soon!) focused on Women’s Rights and Influencers.  You can also read posts about four amazing women leaders who have offered to share their unique immigration stories with us. Check back on our DEI&A page weekly for a new interview!

Updates on Child Status Protection Act Age Calculation by USCIS

On February 14, 2023, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued a Policy Alert, which contains policy guidance in the USCIS Policy Manual to update when an immigrant visa “becomes available” for purpose of calculation Child Status Protection Act age in certain situations.  In short, USCIS will now allow the Date for Filing chart to calculate these noncitizens’ ages As stated in the Policy Alert, this guidance is effective immediately on February 14, 2023, and applies to adjustment of status applications USCIS adjudicates on or after February 14, 2023. Therefore, noncitizens with pending adjustment of status applications based upon an immigrant petition in a preference category, on or after February 14, 2023, will benefit from this update. Background The CSPA is a United States federal law that was signed into law on August 6, 2002. The law was enacted to address the problem of immigrant children who “age out” of their eligibility for certain immigration benefits due to the lengthy processing times involved in the immigration system. The CSPA addressed this problem by changing the way that the age of a derivative child is calculated for immigration purposes. Under the CSPA, a derivative child’s age is “frozen” at the time […]
