Farshad Owji Elected AILA President 2023

WR Immigration is honored to announce that Partner, Farshad Owji has been elected as the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) President for 2023. Boasting current memberships in the Florida, Minnesota, and District of Columbia bars, as well as the Istanbul Bar Association in Turkey, Farshad is eminently deserving of this esteemed position. Farshad’s AILA installation took place in Orlando on June 22, 2023.

We are overjoyed to see another attorney from our firm assume the role of AILA president. Our team of legal professionals consistently extends their thought leadership beyond the walls of WR offices and actively engages in AILA leadership roles. Managing Partner and past AILA President Bernie Wolfsdorf expressed his pride, stating, “I am immensely proud of Farshad’s election and have no doubt that he will serve with unwavering dedication and compassion. He is the ideal leader in these challenging times.”

Farshad has a long-standing commitment to immigration law. Based in San Francisco, California, he has spent his career advocating for the rights of immigrants and their families. His dedication to providing exceptional legal representation has earned him wide recognition and respect within the immigration law community.

Changes to Form I-9 and the Virtual Inspection Process: Top 5 Things to Know

As we previously reported, the Department of Homeland Security is making changes to Form I-9 and has created a permanent virtual I-9 document inspection procedure (“Alternative Procedure”). The most important takeaways from the DHS announcement are listed below. 1. A New Form I-9 DHS has announced that beginning August 1, 2023 employers may use the new version of the Form I-9. Use of the new Form I-9 will not be mandatory until November 1, 2023. The new Form I-9 is back to one page! 2. A Permanent Virtual I-9 Document Inspection Process (“Alternative Procedure”) DHS, in conjunction with a new regulation, has created a permanent virtual I-9 document inspection process (Alternative Procedure) that will be effective for employees hired on or after August 1, 2023. 3. The Alternative Procedure is Only Available to Qualified Employers The new virtual I-9 document inspection process is only available to Qualified Employers which, at a minimum, is an employer that is enrolled and in good standing in the E-Verify program. 4.
