Our country has lost a great leader in Senator Lindsey Graham—someone who understood that the United States is, at its core, a nation of immigrants.
His passing marks the end of an era for American immigration policy.
For more than two decades, Graham stood among the few lawmakers willing to confront the nation’s deeply divisive immigration challenges. While others used the issue for political gain, he chose the harder path—working across the aisle to pursue lasting legislative solutions.
In partnership with Senators John McCain, Edward Kennedy, Marco Rubio, Charles Schumer, Dick Durbin, and others, Graham helped lead bipartisan immigration reform efforts in 2006, 2007, and 2013. These efforts reflected his enduring commitment to thoughtful, comprehensive reform.
Graham consistently affirmed that America could be both a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants. He believed that border security, legal immigration, employment verification, and solutions for long-term undocumented residents were all essential components of a functional system.
For those in the immigration law community, his willingness to engage, listen, and negotiate was invaluable. He understood that immigration is not merely a political issue, but one that touches families, opportunity, innovation, and the very identity of the nation.
Despite the political risks, he remained steadfast in his pursuit of reform, guided by the belief that true leadership requires solving problems rather than avoiding them.
Whether or not one agreed with all his positions, his persistence and commitment to bipartisan solutions stood as a testament to his character.
The immigration system he worked so diligently to reform remains in urgent need of modernization. A meaningful tribute to his legacy would be for Congress to carry forward the work he championed.
Senator Lindsey Graham leaves a lasting mark on public life. His dedication and his belief in America as a nation of immigrants will be remembered.
May he rest in peace.
