CHINA: Temporary Residence Registration Form is now available online – for Shanghai only

Oct 11, 2019 | Global

Effective from 25 October 2019, Shanghai authorities announced that the online applications for Temporary Residence registration can be done by foreign nationals living in Shanghai via the online portal.

Who will be affected?

All foreign nationals living in Shanghai. At the moment, for those living in a hotel or serviced apartment, the online portal cannot be used.

Impact:

This has made the process very convenient as most applicants in Shanghai can fill out the online form instead of visiting the police station in person. Shanghai is the 1st city in China to introduce this new approach.

However, if foreigners have a challenge during registration, it would be necessary to visit the police station to register.

Analysis:

The form has the same force and effect as the old one.  Both Chinese and English versions are available.

The e-mail address, address in Shanghai, a photo of the information page of the passport, and arrival and departure dates should be provided when registering. Once the form is filled out, the user should receive a confirmation via text within a few minutes.
