On Tuesday, January 11, 2011, USCIS announced the release of a new and revised Handbook for Employers, also known as the M-274, which is a guide designed to help employers understand the Form I-9 process. The handbook was last revised 7/31/2009.
Employers must verify identity and work authorization of every employer hired after November 6, 1986 by completing the Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. The updated handbook is designed to guide employers and Human Resources professionals to properly verify employment authorization which can be confusing due to the many permutations of authorized employment, as well as the lack of clear guidance on how to handle specific atypical situations. It also contains information about new regulations addressing electronic storage and retention of forms, and other updates.

We will address the specific changes in the new handbook, and will provide practical tactics to appropriately process I-9 forms and verify work authorization in standard conditions as well as some of the more nuanced (and confusing!) circumstances.
